Loyal customers Ken and Lesley Livingston were the focus of attention when they were chosen to officially open a new-look opticians in Alsager.

They performed the honours at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care on Lawton Road, Alsager, and received a gift voucher and a plant as a thank you.

The couple are not only long-time customers, but they also regularly call in on behalf of Alsager Lions Club to pick up used and unwanted spectacles donated by the public to help people in need in developing countries.

Branch manager Hannah Machin said: "Our revamped store looks great, so we wanted to mark its reopening in style.

"Lesley and Ken are such positive people who we always look forward to seeing. We felt they were an ideal choice to launch it."

Lion Ken, an 80-year-old retired marine engineer, said: "It was a surprise; we were dumbfounded to be honest. We both have our eye tests and glasses from Scrivens and I have hearing aids too.

"The staff are superb and we appreciate their support."

Retired office administrator Lesley, aged 78, added: "It is one of our favourite collection points."

Lions clubs around the UK collect unwanted and damaged spectacles which are recycled, sorted and sent on for use in eye clinics overseas.

The modernised Alsager store has two new testing rooms, features the latest digital eye examination equipment and has a new and updated range of frames, including the latest designer names.

Family business Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care was established in 1938 and has 173 branches. For more information visit here.
