Our Christmas special featuring saxophonist Rod Mason and trumpeter Bryan Corbett!
Mason started playing the saxophone aged 12 during his 2nd year at secondary school. At University he formed with others the Northern Jazz Orchestra which played throughout the North at festivals and other venues; Mason was the M.D. for 2 years. He also had a small band playing has original compositions.
Mason is heavily influenced by the likes of Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, John Surman, Jan Garbarek and Lars Moller. He has played with many of the country's main jazz stars including Alan Skidmore, Peter King, Don Weller, Art Themen, Guy Barker, Gerard Presencer, Steve Waterman, Jim Mullen and Mark Nightingale. He has played in Europe and featured at many international jazz festivals. Mason also tends to be influenced by guitarists, notably John McLaughlin, John Scofield and Bill Frisell.
As well performing under his own name, Corbett has been performing and recording for world renowned artists and bands such as The Brand New Heavies, Tony Christie, Us3, Alesha Dixon, Brian McFadden, Mica Paris, Beverley Knight, Gary US Bonds, Ruby Turner, and the list goes into a who's who in the jazz and commercial world. He has toured and performed around the globe as a guest artist and with his own bands and regularly performs at festivals, concert halls and clubs throughout the U.K. He has also featured on the soundtrack to major commercials for Fiat 500, Iceland and Panasonic.
Corbett is featured as a soloist or in horn sections on numerous recordings and has also been featured soloist with the 'BBC Concert Orchestra' and Big Band Maopolski in Krakow, Poland. He was a winner of the 'Jerwood Rising Star' at Cheltenham International Festival and his Quartet has previously won the poll winner prize at Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
Joining Mason and Corbett on piano will be our good friend Tom Kincaid. With a sound that combines the effortless intricacy of Art Tatum's playing with the laid-back lyricism of Erroll Garner, Kincaid's swinging style and impeccable ear lead him to be one of Europe's most in-demand pianists. Kincaid has accompanied the likes of Elkie Brooks, Scott Hamilton, Art Themen, Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams and Roy Williams & even worked with Shakin' Stevens!
Completing the quintet will be house musicians, Peter Robinson (bass) and Roger Keay (drums).
It starts at the golf club (ST7 2UR) at 8pm; all are welcome (no membership required), £7 cash on the door with a raffle.
