For the next week, The Wilbraham Arms in Alsager will be providing free lunches for any child who would normally receive free school meals.

The pub, located on Sandbach Road North, made the announcement via their Facebook page: "We know times are tough for everybody at the moment, and with half term coming up and the news surrounding free school meals, we would like to take the opportunity to say that we do not want to see children go hungry.

"During half term the fridge in our carvery unit will be stocked with fruit, sandwiches, juice boxes and snacks.

"Please, please if you're struggling come down and grab a lunch for your child and please do not feel as though you have to buy anything from us in return, we just want to help."

Nub News reported yesterday that The Chinese Garden restaurant in Alsager had pledged to help those most in need.

Businesses in Alsager are making these kind-hearted gestures after the Conservative government voted down a motion to feed more than £1.4 million children during school breaks until Easter next year.

The bid, tabled by Labour, was defeated by 322 votes to 261 - with a majority of 61.

The motion was backed by England and Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford, his campaign to end child poverty recently saw him awarded with an MBE.

Congleton MP Fiona Bruce (Conservative), who represents Alsager, voted against the motion.

Nub News reported that the Congleton MP was accused of putting her party whips views above her own values.

Rashford has been "blown away" by news of local businesses stepping up to fill the voucher scheme during the October half term.
