A woman who has made a unique contribution to Alsager through her unwavering commitment to animal welfare and the care of vulnerable animals has been awarded Honorary Freewoman of Alsager.
Hilary Baxter has been the driving force behind Alsager Animals in Need, a charity founded in 1987 that has become one of the town's most respected and valued community organisations. Hilary took over running the charity in 1990.
The charity holds monthly fundraising coffee mornings at Alsager Civic and is often supported by vets at Vets for Pets Alsager.

And yesterday (Thursday) Alsager's MP, Sarah Russell, Mayor of Cheshire East, Judy Snowball, town councillors and volunteers from Alsager Animals watched Alsager Mayor, Councillor Pauline Hubbard, present the award to Hilary.
Hilary, 88, who lives in Alsager said: "It's such an honour to receive this award which will take pride of place over the mantlepiece at home.
"I'm overwhelmed to think people think so much of what I've achieved. This is something I never expected. It will take pride of place over my mantelpiece.
"It's lovely to think people think so much of me. I'm overwhelmed."
Presenting the award, Mayor Cllr Pauline Hubbard said: "This afternoon we celebrate not only a remarkable achievement but a remarkable person.
"Some honours are given for a single moment of achievement others recognise a lifetime of dedication, perseverance and selfless service. This afternoon falls very much into the latter category."
The town council say the award has been bestowed on Hilary due to "exceptional services to the town and people of Alsager and commitment to animal welfare".
The charity, which holds monthly coffee mornings at Alsager Civic, provides shelter, veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and ongoing support to animals in need, whilst ensuring that all prospective homes are carefully assessed to safeguard the welfare of every animal placed in its care.
Under her stewardship, Alsager Animals in Need has grown into a highly respected local charity supported by dozens of volunteers and serving communities across Cheshire East, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. The charity's impact over the years has been remarkable, having rehomed thousands of dogs and cats whilst maintaining a policy that places animal welfare at the heart of every decision.
