Angry Alsager residents have slammed motorists for parking in the street and not using a Cheshire East car park to save paying for parking saying it's making the road dangerous.

Furious residents living in Station Road and nearby roads say cars are parking on the pavement making it dangerous for pedestrians.

They say the situation has arisen after Cheshire East made the nearby Well Lane car park ticketed instead of free and some say they are forced to pay for parking instead of being able to park outside their home.

One resident said: "It tends to be the same people parking along the roads around here because they work in the local shops/establishments.

"As a resident in Cross Street where the terraced houses don't have off road parking, I am constantly being displaced and having to park on Well Lane Car Park.

"As a single household income, this is impacting on my disposable income as I have to pay for an annual permit costing over £100 in the next financial year on top of my council tax when non residents are taking full advantage of parking on the surrounding side roads and streets without any scruples.

"The roads are becoming dangerous as a result because the car parks on Station Road probably have around half a dozen cars parking on there during the day because people don't want to pay.

"When it was free, it was far less congested and I did have a chance of parking close to my home on Cross Street on most occasions.

"Now it's incredibly lucky if I can get outside my house during the week and it's only at the weekend where I can park."

Another resident said: "Traffic travelling down Station Road has been a problem with speeding being such a straight road with no effective speed bumps.

"It is used as a rat run to avoid having to go through the lights in the centre of Alsager and is regularly used be heavy goods vehicles even with our weight restriction on the road.

"The car parks used to be full before the introduction of parking charges and now it is a question if four or five cars use the car park on the junction of Well Lane and Station Road. Residents face a constant battle trying to get into their own properties.

"Getting out is dangerous as you can't see to get out of your own drive with parked vehicles either side blocking the view.

"Road users still speed up and down the road to try and get to one end or the other before facing oncoming traffic and having to sharply pull in to a gap if there is one!

"Also not only cars, but other large vehicles mount the pavement and drive at speed to get to their destination. It's only a matter of time before someone walks or drives out of their drive."
