Pothole-riddled Lawton Road has been repaired and more improvements are on the way
By Deborah Bowyer 22nd Jan 2026
A notorious stretch of road in Alsager which was so badly damaged with potholes and an uneven surface that it was discussed in Parliament has finally been resurfaced.
Alsager Cheshire East councillor, Rod Fletcher, had notification that work would be carried out in January and right on schedule, the work has been done much to the delight of motorists.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "Resurfacing works on Lawton Road, in Alsager, up to Bank Corner, began on 14 January 2026 and were completed, over four nights, on the morning of 20 January.
"The planned improvements to the pedestrian crossing and traffic signals on Lawton Road will take place as part of our programme of works for the 2026-27 financial year. We will provide further updates once the pedestrian crossing improvements have been scheduled."
Councillor Rod Fletcher had campaigned strenuously for four years to get the road repaired, writing to Cheshire East's highways department.

Cllr Fletcher said: "The work has been extended until Friday night/Saturday morning. It looks much better already.
"Whilst we have waited many years for this resurfacing to take place, it is now a relief to drive along Lawton Road without having to avoid potholes."
Residents had complained vigorously about the state of Lawton Road in the centre of Alsager so much so that local MP, Sarah Russell raised the subject in the House of Commons.

She said previously: "It's a major part of the town centre and the degeneration of the road is making it look less attractive than otherwise it could.
"Do you agree with me that these are important points not just for the state of our roads but for the whole of the local economy?"
Now it looks like Cheshire East is set to make improvements to the pedestrian crossing in Alsager as well. Watch this space!
