A former nursery teacher who swapped the classroom for a shop selling products for sustainable living is celebrating her first year in business.

Rose's Refills in Lawton Road, Alsager opened its doors on October 28th last year and owner, Rose King, says business is booming.

And she says the business has prevented around 1,500 litres of bottles and products going to landfill by running her business.

"It's gone better than expected. I always thought Alsager was a good demographics for the business and I was right," said Rose.

"People are starting to change their habits and are making small changes to their shopping patterns."

"I've supplied just under 3,000 litres of cleaning products. Assuming a litre a bottle that's obviously 3,000.

"If you base that on national averages that's prevented 1,500 going to landfill (despite being put in recycling), 750 being sent abroad for recycling and 750 being recycled in the UK."

Rose King worked at Springhead Primary School in Talke Pitts for before opening the shop.

"We've expanded the stock selling all kinds of products from cereal varieties to herbs and spices and sweet treats.

"We have a loyal customer base and I am just hoping customers will carry on coming as much when the parking charges come in.

"There's so many benefits to buying refills and people are starting to realise this."

Customers can take or buy a container and refill it with anything from pasta and rice to shampoo and laundry liquid.

Nub News told here how Rose was inspired to embark on a sustainable lifestyle by daughter, Chloe, after she did a Masters at the Centre of Alternative Technology.

"It's about making changes, however small or big they are, for future generations," said Rose previously.

"We don't know what life will be like in the future but we need to start thinking about what is happening and the impact we're having."
