Discarded cigarette is thought to have started major field fire in Church Lawton

A discarded cigarette is thought to have started a big field fire in Lawton Heath Road yesterday (Monday).

Three fire engines from Alsager, Holmes Chapel and Congleton went to the blaze in Lawton Heath Road at 4.37 pm on 6 July.

Firefighters used hose reel jets to tackle the fire measuring around 150 x 50 metres.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews remained at the scene for around two hours dampening down hot spots and monitoring the area with a thermal imaging camera.

"It is believed to have been ignited by a discarded cigarette in a nearby public bin."
