An Alsager councillor has reacted to the Leader of Reform UK and Member of Parliament Nigel Farage's announcement yesterday (Tuesday) saying he was stepping down as an MP.

According to multiple media reports, Nigel Farage said he is resigning as the Member of Parliament for Clacton in order to trigger a by-election. However, he says he intends to stand again in that by-election.

Councillor Reg Kain, who serves on both Alsager Town Council and Cheshire East Council, told Alsager Nub News: "It's a ploy to show that people support Nigel Farage and his policies.

"That's all I can say for the moment as I don't actually know the true reasons for his move."

Cllr Kain became a Reform UK councillor in March last year, having defected from the Liberal Democrats.
