A ward councillor is "pressing" for measures to be implemented that were "promised" when the former MMU site was being developed, which would prevent motorbikes getting onto the Alsager Sports Hub.

Several residents have contacted Cllr Phil Williams to express their concerns about the vandalism and anti-social behaviour issues that have been taking place at the Alsager Sports Hub, on Dunnocksfold Road.

Speaking at last Tuesday's Alsager Town Council meeting, Cllr Williams revealed that he was "pressing" for measures to be implemented at the sports hub to "prevent" motorbikes accessing the site.

Cllr Williams said: "Most of the anti-social behaviour that we have spoken about is fairly low level, but it does cause considerable anxiety to residents."

The ward councillor told the meeting that he was "promised" by a former Cheshire East officer, who is now retired, that when the former MMU site was being developed, measures would be put in place to prevent motorbikes getting onto the sports pitches.

Cllr Mick Warren, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for communities, said: "We deplore any type of anti-social behaviour and are aware of the problems that have emerged at this location.

"We have increased our community enforcement patrols in the area as part of a multi-agency response and we will continue to respond to complaints from our residents whenever there are disturbances or rowdy behaviour that causes concern.

"The council is also working with Everybody Sport and Recreation – the borough's leisure trust – to discuss what other measures can be taken to tackle the problem.

"During this pandemic, young people should not be gathering in large groups and we would ask them and their parents to be aware of the distress that anti-social behaviour can cause to people living in their neighbourhood."

Nub News previously reported that the hub has installed CCTV and flood lit lighting which detects people congregating.
