Congleton MP, Fiona Bruce, says she didn't attend yesterday's (Sunday) hustings at Congleton Town Hall due to "security concerns". 

As revealed in our sister site here, Congleton Town Hall hosted a hustings event yesterday afternoon (Sunday). 

A hustings is a meeting whereby members of the public can ask questions to Parliamentary candidates. 

Fiona Bruce MP says

A spokesperson for Fiona Bruce MP said: "Fair minded people of Congleton will understand that in light of disturbing conduct targeted at Fiona Bruce at previous hustings - including (but not only) Fiona being hit while on the platform at the closure of a hustings, with such force that she was knocked to the ground and the police arrested her assailant - and in light also of increasing national concerns about effective security for all candidates, such events require sufficient time and notice to enable proper planning and scrutiny of arrangements." 

Seven candidates will be battling it out in a bid to become the next MP for Congleton at Thursday's General Election (July 4th). 

The main towns and villages in the Congleton constituency are Alsager, Congleton, Sandbach and Holmes Chapel.

Fiona Bruce will be hoping to hold on to the seat she has held for the Conservatives since 2010. 

Sarah Russell will be hoping she can snatch it for Labour, while Paul Duffy will be hoping the Liberal Democrats can stake their claim. 

Richard McCarthy is standing for the Green Party and Rob Moreton is standing as an Independent candidate. 

Kay Wesley is fighting for the Women's Equality Party and Martin York is standing for Reform UK. 

Congleton has always been considered a Conservative stronghold.
