We can underestimate the impact hormones have on us. Chemical and hormonal imbalances have a massive impact on our mental health, says Alsager counsellor, Hannah Bolton.

"Hormone levels affect both women and men. There is not much literature around about how a man’s hormone levels can be affected," she said.

"If testosterone or cortisol levels are imbalanced this can affect a man’s mood. It can create anxiety and or depression.

"Men don’t often talk about it due to embarrassment, feeling that no one would understand or the assumption that hormones only affect women."

If you are a man reading this, I want you to know it’s perfectly ok to feel low in mood or overwhelmed at times, says Hannah.

"Men can feel anxious or stressed just as much as women. Self-care is also important. Self-care is different for everyone but make it a priority for you!"

There is also a lot of stigma around women and hormones. Women can hear derogatory comments like, ‘oh it’s that time again,’ or ‘I can tell what sort of mood you'rein, said Hannah.

"Sometimes women do not always have control over their hormones. Emotions can run high at certain times of the month.

"This can create an intensity of emotions, an increase or decrease in appetite as well as experiencing a higher level of anxiety just to name a few."

As a woman who has also had two children, I can relate to having hormonal imbalances at times, says Hannah

"It is not a nice feeling. I’ve often felt out of control or found myself either withdrawing or snapping at others when I’ve felt my emotions have got the better of me.

"I often reflect on these times and have felt helpless. I have reached out to others at this time and sought support where needed. There is absolutely no shame in this.

"I would also say please be kind to yourself where you can. Practice in self-care and rely on support from others around you. It is not a weakness to need or want help. It makes you human."
