People gathering for this year's Remembrance services at Alsager War Memorial are set to notice a difference.
The town's famous soldier at the junction of Sandbach Road South and Ashmore's Lane has had a clean – thanks to Alsager War Memorial Restoration Trust.
The Alsager War Memorial Restoration Trust (AWMRT) arranged for the War Memorial to be cleaned recently at a cost of £1,000.
The trust gets funds from Alsager Town Council, the Rotary Club of Alsager and B'hoy's of Alsager and is now appealing for donations to carry on with its work.
Tim Smith, chair of AWMRT said: "Following all the rain this year, the memorial was looking in very sorry state, now the high quality of the original stone masonry work can clearly be seen.
"Finding a suitable firm to do the work proved extremely challenging, in that the firm used before has ceased trading and local stone masons did not have facilities to work at height. Finally, Tony Logan of Oldham agreed.
"Early next year we will look to refresh the grass and garden area in conjunction with the Royal British Legion."
Mr Smith added: "The cost of the work has been funded by a grant from the Alsager Town Council, The Rotary Club of Alsager and B'hoy's of Alsager.
"Funds are needed to allow the War Memorial and surrounding gardens to be kept to a high standard going forwards.
"Hence, we are asking for donations from local community groups and individuals who would like to support us."
