An Alsager councillor is urging residents in the town and further afield to follow climate changing ways after her agenda item on the subject was adopted by Alsager Town Council.

And Councillor June Buckley, a Cheshire East councillor and member of Cheshire East Environment and Communities committee now wants other Cheshire East town councils to follow suit and adopt some of the policies she is campaigning for.

Alsager Town Council has resolved to undertake to reduce the council's carbon footprint by a agreeing to a number of measures put forward by Cllr Buckley.

These include having a plant-based dish available at every council sponsored event, all town council sponsored events to use locally produced (not locally bought) products where possible and the Civic Manager to actively encourage all hirers to have plant-based options and a range of menus available.

The town council has also agreed to investigate and report back on the costs and issues involved with the installation of Photovoltaic Solar Panels at the Civic Centre and The Institute.

Cllr Buckley, an avid climate change supporter, says making small changes to our lives and how we live will impact on the future and help us protect our environment and world for generations to come.

She says changes like switching to electric or hybrid cars, installing solar panels, eating less meat, upcycling wherever possible, having ponds in our gardens, using environmentally friendly products and switching to a green energy provider can all help.

She said: "I have solar panels on my house bought from a local firm. I wish I'd done it three years ago. It will take a number of years to get my money back but every little does help."

When Cllr Buckley changed her car she chose an ex demonstration hybrid which she says was amazing during the recent petrol shortage crisis.

"I had no problem at all. I have used very little petrol since buying it and charge it up at home."

Cllr Buckley has challenged Alsager Town Centre Manager to come up with a report to the next full council meeting outlining a campaign to improve awareness among the community about changes they can make.

She is hoping that a 20-30 "menu" of simple things will be designed which members of the public can choose from to adopt.

"It could be using tea bags which don't have a metal

clip - this has proven to save so much metal or it

could mean using eco-friendly packaging or compostable packaging, buying things from charity shops and donating to charity shops.

"We can be extravagant but not wasteful," says Cllr Buckley. "I have milk delivered in bottles, I always take my own coffee reusable mugs and good quality containers can be used over and over again in the freezer for example.

"Use a water butt, water your plants with rainwater you've collected and if you've got a pond create a beach-like environment so wildlife can get in and out of the pond. The list is endless," she says.
