An alsager firefighter has received a commendation for his bravery during a house fire.

Gareth Park received a commendation - the highest form of recognition which can be offered and only issued by the Chief Fire Officer in instances where staff have taken action, directly resulting in the saving of a life.

Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said the commendations were given recognising our staff at Runcorn, Widnes and Penketh fire stations for their actions at a serious house fire in Runcorn on 11 January this year.

A spokesperson said: "On arrival, firefighters were faced with a severe fire that had left the occupant trapped in the first-floor bathroom.

"The fire was so intense that several steps of the staircase had been destroyed, making efforts to rescue the casualty even more difficult.

"Despite the extreme conditions, determined breathing apparatus teams calmly navigated their way through darkness and thick smoke to reach the lady and bring her to safety.

"This was a true team effort, with each crew member playing a vital role in the successful outcome. "

Station Manager Paul Rostance who was at the scene and said: "I was fortunate to witness firsthand the professionalism of the fire crews - from the calm, resilient leadership of the officer in charge, to the BA teams executing the rescue and extinguishing the fire, as well as the crews outside efficiently managing the fire ground and checking nearby properties."

"Every individual displayed exceptional skill, composure, and dedication in the face of adversity, embodying the very best of our service."

Gareth Park said: "It's an honour to receive the fire chief commendation, but it was a professionalism of the team efforts to perform the rescue in a very difficult changing incident

"I was just doing my job to the best of my ability."
