New-look plan to transform the iconic Bank Corner building in Alsager thrown out

New plans to change the layout of the new-look Bank Corner building in Alsager have been refused.
Cheshire East Council's planners granted permission for the conversion of the ground floor space into two retail units including a pharmacy and café, and the first-floor area into self-contained apartments.
But a new application by Allied Pharmacies here to relocate the pharmacy to the adjacent unit and remove the café element from the proposal has been thrown out.
The latest proposal for the Lawton Road building also included the remaining ground floor unit to be changed to banking use. Now planners have said a new planning application would be necessary.

A letter from a Cheshire East planning officer to the applicant said: "The proposed removal of one of the retail units from the plans approved under planning permission 25/2968/FUL would fundamentally go against the description of the proposed development.
"The replacement of a retail unit with financial services use is considered to be material as this would require an alteration to the approved description of development. In this instance, a new planning application would be necessary."
Bank Corner closed closed in March 2023 and the building has been empty since.
Manager of Alsager Pharmacy, Tina Burgess, confirmed in June that the pharmacy was moving to Bank Corner and was waiting for a date.
She said then: "We're very excited about it. It will be great to be in the centre of town. We'll have much more space with consultation rooms."
