A Sparkling Evening of ‘Hot Club’ Jazz

As the year draws to a close, Alsager Golf & Country Club Jazz Society is delighted to continue what has fast become a cherished tradition — an evening of exhilarating Parisian 'Hot Club' style jazz. On Thursday 11th December 2025, we welcome back the dazzling trio of Julian Gregory (violin), Matthew Compton (accordion), and Paul Hartley (guitar), joined by our trusted house rhythm section.

Julian Gregory, the driving force behind this captivating ensemble, is a violinist of rare skill and versatility. A long-standing member of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Julian's remarkable musicianship and command of multiple styles have made him one of the most admired performers of his generation. His playing, rooted in the spirit of Stéphane Grappelli, bursts with energy, spontaneity and a sense of joy that lights up the room. Yet his influences stretch far beyond the classic Hot Club sound, drawing from Latin, Bluegrass, Celtic and contemporary idioms — a truly eclectic approach that makes every performance unique.

At his side is fellow BBC Philharmonic colleague Matthew Compton, whose mastery of the accordion brings colour, warmth and rhythmic vitality to the group's sound. Matthew's deep musical understanding allows him to weave intricate countermelodies and textures around Julian's violin, conjuring that unmistakable Parisian flair and elegance.

On guitar, Paul Hartley provides the rhythmic heartbeat and harmonic richness that define the Hot Club style. A respected figure on the UK jazz scene, Paul is known for his fluid improvisation and crisp, swinging accompaniment. His interplay with Julian and Matthew is electric — full of sparkle, humour and that irresistible sense of swing that keeps audiences coming back year after year.

Completing the quintet will be the club's ever-dependable rhythm team, Peter Robinson (bass) and Roger Keay (drums), adding depth, drive and balance to the ensemble's sound.

The concert begins at 8:00 pm at Alsager Golf & Country Club (ST7 2UR). All are welcome — no membership required. Admission is £10 cash on the door, with an optional raffle.

Join us for a festive evening of joyous swing, dazzling musicianship and Parisian-style jazz to warm even the coldest December night.
