Former Cheshire East Councillor and Alsager Town Council Chair, Philip Williams, has won back a seat on Alsager Town Council.

The Liberal Democrat, who was chair of Alsager Town Council from 2022 to 2023 and served on the town council for eight years before stepping down, has won back a seat on the council.

Mr Williams polled 466 votes in Thursday's (28 May) Central ward by-election beating Reform UK candidate, David Mahoney who polled 337 votes and Katie Bailey 196 votes.

The turnout was 27.3 per cent.

Last June, he stood as he Liberal Democrat councillor in the Alsager East by-election but unfortunately didn't win but his luck changed in the Central ward by-election last week.

He told Alsager Nub News: " I helped develop Alsager's Neighbourhood Plan, led on improvements to the Hassall Road Play Area and took a strong interest in parks and open spaces.

"As Chair of the Town Council from 2022-23, I saw first-hand the excellent work done by so many community and voluntary groups.

"Town and parish councils have a remit to support such groups and enhance the quality of life for all residents. That would be my first commitment and priority – born out of a strong belief in fairness, equity and balance.

"I belong to a Liberal Democrat group that has served this town well for over 40 years. I firmly believe that councillors should represent all residents, not only those who vote for them or share their political views.

"I will ensure that all information shared with residents is accurate and that those initiatives I support are well considered and thought-through.

"I believe in scrutiny, transparency and common sense in the deployment of town council assets and in value for money in council services.

"A Central Ward resident once described me as their 'go-to councillor'. I will try to live up to that reputation and repay the trust of all those who voted for me."
