The head of Church Lawton School, a specialist school for children with autism, has represented the United Kingdom at one of Europe's most significant gatherings of autism organisations.
Church Lawton School, based near Alsager, is a specialist school for around 70 local children with autism and part of the Liberty multi academy trust.
Paul Scales, Principal of Church Lawton School, travelled to Hungary alongside Jo Galloway, Director of Education at the Liberty Academy Trust, following an invitation to attend the 2026 Annual General Assembly of Autism-Europe in Budapest
It brought together autism organisations, self-advocates, families, researchers and education leaders from more than 40 countries.
The 2026 assembly focused on strengthening social protection systems, improving education, health and community support, and advancing practical guidance for the criminal justice system and family advocacy.
Autism-Europe represents nearly 90 member organisations and an estimated seven million autistic people across the continent.
Paul Scales said: "It was encouraging to see the shared commitment across Europe to improving outcomes for autistic people and their families.
"Many of the discussions resonated strongly with our focus on quality of life, preparation for adulthood, and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive and achieve."
Key themes at the assembly included improving access to inclusive education, promoting autism-specific training for professionals, and ensuring autistic voices and family perspectives shape policy and practice at every level.
Church Lawton School is one of three specialist autism schools operated by Liberty Academy Trust, alongside Thames Valley School near Reading and Vanguard School in Lambeth.
The Trust will use the learning from Budapest to inform future strategic development across its schools, including curriculum design, school improvement and both national and international partnerships.
Jo Galloway added: "The opportunity to connect with colleagues from across Europe has provided valuable insights and reinforced the importance of collaborative working.
"We are committed to bringing back innovative ideas and evidence-based practice that will further strengthen the education and support we provide."
