Alsager Town Council says it's "more than disappointed" with the outcome of the decision by Cheshire East to introduce charges on all but one of the town's car parks.
The highways and transport committee voted in January in favour of changes to the parking policy, which includes introducing charges in the existing 'free' towns and villages including Alsager.
A formal request by the Conservatives on Cheshire East to reconsider the decision to introduce parking charges in free towns and hike up prices in others was also refused.
Now Alsager Town Council has hit back at the decision saying there was a strong campaign and clear message from Alsager residents and it claims Cheshire East "has failed to consider all relevant information both from the consultation and the information provided by members of the public and visiting councillors at the meeting itself".
"As a Town Council, we remain seriously concerned about the impact parking charges will have on our economy, the vibrancy of our town centre and the safety of our streets which will be impacted by displacement parking.
"We remain opposed to the charging and are worried about the further Cheshire East proposals to raise additional revenue by the introduction of evening, Sunday, and cashless charging, which are being proposed via another round of "consultation" which the Town Council will again oppose.
"The Town Council will now commence discussions with Cheshire East to explore what financials options are available in order to mitigate the impact of charging on our town and we will further explore how the Well Lane resident's car park could be re-designated as "free".
"The Town Council will push for the appropriate "mitigations" that were detailed by Cheshire East in their consultation and will look to work with residents and local groups to collect the evidence and data that will be required to influence Cheshire East to implement the mitigations including:
- Residents and Businesses Parking Permits.
- Double yellow lines on roads impacted by "displacement parking".
- Push for additional Enforcement Officers.
- Oppose the one-way system suggested for Shady Grove/Wesley Place due to danger for pedestrians unless a pavement can be installed.
"To achieve this the Town Council will look to support from Alsager residents and our local community groups."
Many residents in Alsager vehemently opposed the plan as we revealed in this story here and here with many sending in letters of objection.
