The Alsager businesses fighting to combat holiday hunger this half-term

26th Oct 2020 | Local News

Over the weekend, Nub News reported that The Chinese Garden and The Wilbraham Arms would be providing free meals for any child who would normally receive free school meals.

This followed the rejection of the Labour motion to continue directly funding provision of free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021 by 322 votes to 261.

Many other community-minded local businesses have followed suit, and are offering free food for children who might need it, in a bid to combat holiday hunger.

We put together a list of some these generous pubs, restaurants and a football club:

The Bank Corner

Every day until Friday 30th, from 12pm-4pm, The Bank Corner will be offering a free meal for families that are struggling.

The pub said: "To all the lovely people of Alsager we are here to help this half-term.

"We are all in this together."

The Broughton Arms, Rode Heath

A spokesperson for The Broughton Arms said: "Normally I would be telling you about our usual kids eat for £1 during half-term offer, but as this requires an adult to buy a meal this would be no help to families with children who rely on free school meals or anyone who is struggling to feed their children during these difficult times.

"If anyone is worried about feeding their children this half-term please message me privately and we will provide you with meals for your children to eat in or take away for free without having to buy anything in return.

"No child should go hungry."

Latif's

Children up to the age of 12 eat for free with every family entry at Latif's. The Indian restaurant is open from 5pm to 11pm.

Alsager Town Football Club

The football club will be making donations to Alsager Foodbank, and they will be using their Wood Park Stadium as a drop off point; they will then drop the food off with the Alsager Foodbank.

A spokesperson for Alsager Foodbank said: "This year has been the toughest we've faced as a nation in a long, long time but with the help and support from everyone we can get through this.

"Donations can be dropped off at Wood Park Stadium between 11am and 2pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, Tuesday matchdays between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, and Saturday matchdays between 12:30pm and 2:30pm.

"Our first donation has been made by our first team squad, who stand alongside the people of Alsager at this difficult time.

"Let's work together and help the people who need it most and rest assured this club is part of the community."

If you know any other businesses or organisations in Alsager or its surrounding areas that are offering free school meals during half-term then please let us know and we will add them to the list.
