Motorists using Alsager's roads are set to have a smoother ride – thanks to hard working members from a local scout group.

Teenagers are often criticised for spending too much time on their phones but for one task carried out by Explorers from the 1st Alsager Scout group this was essential.

Phoenix Explorers, aged between 14 and 17 years old, were tasked to go out and identify potholes in local roads, reporting them to Cheshire East Council's 'Fix My Street'.

Leaders put a post out on Facebook asking residents to tell them which roads had the most/worst potholes in Alsager.

The result was 111 comments each identifying pothole 'hotspots' ranging from the section between Bank Corner lights and the ASDA lights to Chells Hill and the road to Sandbach.

A spokesperson for the Explorers said: "They reported what they found which was around 78 and we've had several replies to some already, saying they are being acted on.

"Teenagers get a lot of stick over the amount of time they spend on their mobile phone but this is one time when it paid dividends.

"It was a fun and interesting exercise to do and it will also benefit the community. Many of the Explorers are cyclists so potholes can be an issue for them as well. "

Around 30 Explorers took part in the exercise which saw them setting off from their base, the scout hall in Cedar Avenue.

And the exercise seems to have been met with a positive response from local residents.

"What a fantastic initiative.Well done. Keep up the good work. If the same potholes are reported continuously it moves them up the scoring criteria for a more sustainable fix," one said.

Another said: "Fields Road is shockingly bad. Chancery Lane comes second . I drive around Alsager quite a lot with my job and these two are horrendous . I also try to avoid Asda crossroads."
