The world's only Primitive Methodism museum and working Methodist Chapel near Alsager has celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Englesea Brook Chapel & Museum of Primitive Methodism in Englesea Brook Lane, held a 40th anniversary service on Sunday (23 August) to celebrate.

Founded in 1986, Englesea Brook Chapel and Museum has long attracted visitors interested to find out more about the fascinating history of primitive Methodism.

Built in 1828, Englesea Brook Chapel is widely regarded as the earliest surviving purpose-built chapel of the Primitive Methodist movement.

The roots of Primitive Methodism can be traced back to the open-air camp meetings organised by Hugh Bourne at Mow Cop in 1807.

Ruth Hilton, Project Director at Englesea Brook, said: "As we mark this milestone anniversary, we celebrate not only the Primitive Methodist history told within these walls, but also the people whose commitment ensures that this story continues to inspire future generations."

Englesea Brook Chapel is holding a 'Jazz Chapel' on 13 September at 3 pm led by the Rev Rob Hilton and Chris Hill Jazz.
