A friendly elderly guinea pig is now happily eating properly again – thanks to an Alsager veterinary practice.

Veterinary surgeon Becky from Vets4Pets in Alsager is passionate about exotic pets.

So when Mr Brown, who is eight years old, came in due to his overgrown teeth and struggling to eat, Becky used her finely honed skills and solved the problem.

"He came in to see vet Becky due to his overgrown teeth and was beginning to struggle eating for himself which meant that he needed assisted hand feeding and syringe feeding.

"Due to Mr Brown's age, an anaesthetic for dental work would be far too risky. With Mr Brown's lovely nature, he allowed us to carefully burr down his incisor teeth," said a spokesperson.

"This of course took a bit of time and patience, but we were able to get the incisors to the correct length without causing any stress.

"His cheek teeth were also checked and looked to be in okay condition. His owner was very concerned with his age and just wanted to do all she could to know he was comfortable.

"Mr Brown went home on pain relief, but for the first time in a while, he was munching hay by himself in his carrier straight after."

Animals classed as exotic are pets such as guinea pigs, rats, mice, birds and reptiles.

"I love treating a variety of species, whether it's a cat or a tortoise, and I have a special interest in exotics," said Becky,

who has several guinea pigs herself and has a strong interest in all furries and exotic pets.

She added: "It was a pleasure to help Mr Brown and his owner, and we are delighted that he is back to his normal happy self."
