They say never work with children and animals but veterinary practice owner, Carl May, couldn't imagine doing anything else nor could his team.

The father-of-one, owner of Alsager's Vets4Pets , is as passionate about animals as he is about his family.

But it's not just dogs which Carl adores – it's any pets which need our care from cats and rabbits to birds.

And it's this passion which led the head veterinary nurse to take on the ownership of the popular Alsager veterinary practice in Lawton Road.

"It's getting bigger every week and we have a long list of committed customers on our books.

"We work hard to have a good relationship with our customers. We're given a position of trust and will do our very best to deliver.

"We can't fix everything but we will certainly try and as well as our staff we have visiting specialists coming into the practice."

Carl has two dogs of his own, Bodhi, a Vizsla, a Hungarian pointer-type breed and Fleur, a short-haired rescue dog.

"Animals give without taking anything and dogs especially know when something isn't right," he says.

"They can be a wonderful addition to a family. My own dogs have given me so much and I know how much it hurts when a pet dies.

"We offer aftercare following a pet loss. Pet counselling can be offered to help with bereavement which is a difficult time for owners."

Carl's career in the veterinary world began as a child when he did work experience in a Newcastle-under-Lyme practice.

"I've always loved animals and loved the work experience. The vet took me under his wing and my career started then," he said.

Carl, who lives in Brown Edge, has a long a varied veterinary career which has seen him working in practices in Stoke-on-Trent as well as New Zealand.

Qualifying as a veterinary nurse back in 1996, Carl says animals can have such a calming effect.

He said: "You can disappear off with a dog for long walks and they are such a conversation opener."

Carl is proud of the services on offer at Vets4Pets which include X-ray, ultrasound, an operating theatre and laboratory equipment.

"We're locally owned and we take great pride in the service which we offer.

"We have a prominent location in the town and our aim is to continue offering the same level of service and care."

The practice currently employs three vets, two receptionists, two veterinary nurses, a trainee veterinary nurse and is recruiting for a part-time vet.
