An Alsager veterinary practice owner has welcomed a government report which looks at concerns in the veterinary sector.

Carl May owns Vets4Pets in Alsager, a practice renowned for its high standards and excellent delivery of care.

He has backed the Competition and Markets Authority report identifying 'multiple' concerns in the veterinary market highlights good and bad practice. The full report can be viewed here

And he says it's a useful benchmark for pet owners to judge the practice which they are using and think very carefully about what is being offered.

He backs transparency in the veterinary sector and says everything his practice is done with this in mind to enable the owner to make an "informed choice".

"We always give an estimate of the work beforehand and if it is needed we will offer interest free payments.

"Our work is based on the best possible treatment for the animal. We don't believe in false economy and offering something which isn't best for the animal in the long run.

"It's important to look at who owns the veterinary practice you're using and ensure that it is providing affordable treatment and care at the highest standards.

"Obviously we need to make a profit to survive, we are a business, but our work is based on  the best possible care for the animal."

Carl's career has a long and distinguished career which began as a child when he did work experience in a Newcastle-under-Lyme practice.

"I've always loved animals and loved the work experience. The vet took me under his wing and my career started then," he said previously.

Carl, who lives in Brown Edge, has worked in practices in Stoke-on-Trent as well as New Zealand.

Qualifying as a veterinary nurse back in 1996, Carl says animals can have such a calming effect.

Vets4Pets Alsager became the first veterinary surgery to receive the National Autistic Society's Autism Friendly Award.

It recognises businesses that have made themselves more accessible to autistic people and their families.

Carl, a RVN (registered veterinary nurse) and the Joint Venture Partner (JVP) of Vets4Pets Alsager, applied for the award after becoming aware of the number of children on the autism spectrum coming into the Alsager practice.

He was interested to know if and how aspects of his practice such as lights, smells and noises could negatively affect clients, making it more difficult for them to visit the practice and therefore, best manage their pets' health.

The report said pet owners might be overpaying for medicines or prescriptions as well as consumers not being given enough information to enable them to choose the best veterinary practice or the right treatment.

However Carl says Vets4Pets in Alsager, Facebook page here  https://www.facebook.com/VetsforPetsAlsager, already complies with the recommendations of the report and urges pet owners to think wisely about choice.
