By day, 12-year-old Isla Fern is just like any other Year 8 student at Alsager School but at the weekend, she often takes on a different look.

For fun-loving Isla has developed something of a passion for Autograss racing and learnt to drive on farm land at just 11-years-old.

She was taught to drive earlier in this year and then on the day, had to sit a verbal test followed by a driving instructor test to enable her to be issued with her race licence. Isla then competed in four heats of racing over the day.

At home, she's also watched her parents in the workshop at their Church Lawton home, working on cars and also helping to get the Nissan Micra converted and painted ready for Autograss racing.

"It was a bit scary the first time I raced but I'm getting used to it now," said Isla who competes on oval tracks doing speeds of around 50 mph.

Isla wears a helmet and race suit and glass is removed as part of the conversion of the vehicles which are fitted with a roll cage and even though she has only just started Autograss racing, has already been awarded her first medal.

She helped her parents paint the vehicle white, yellow and purple but riding vehicles is nothing new to Isla who also enjoys driving a quad bike.

"I just love anything mechanical," said Isla whose parents are just as much fans of Autograss racing as their daughter is.

"It's not as expensive as other sports such as go-karting," said Alec her dad. "It only costs around £10 to enter a race."

Watch this space! It looks like Isla Fern will continue making big waves on the Autograss racing circuit.
