A sporting superstar from nearby Sandbach has a new accolade to her name - the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year 2023.

Sixteen-year-old Mia Brookes was crowned with the prestigious title at a glittering ceremony last night (Tuesday).

Mia made history earlier this year by becoming Britain's youngest snowboarding world champion.

She beat New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott to women's slopestyle gold at the Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships in Georgia.

Mia also landed the first Cab 1440 double grab in a women's event to claim Britain's maiden slopestyle gold.

In January, our sister site, Sandbach Nub News, told here how Mia had won a silver medal at the first slopestyle event of the year in Laax, Switzerland.

Congratulations for Mia, who has been snowboarding since she was 18 months old, have been pouring in from residents in her home town.

Local florists, Flowers on the Cobbles said on their Social Media page: "Massive congratulations Mia Brookes on winning young sports personality of the year!!

"What an awesome achievement! Everyone is so proud of you Mia!"

Until recently, the teenager was a student at Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College in Middlewich Road.

The school previously described her as "true inspiration".

"She is such a talented athlete and becoming World Champion at the age of 16 years is extraordinary," said Nicki Oyler, Deputy Headteacher, when Mia became  Britain's youngest snowboarding world champion.

"We are so proud of everything she has achieved. Mia is dedicated to both her lifelong passion of snowboarding but also her studies and it is remarkable that she balances them successfully. "
