Some rail travellers set for rail chaos today as Piccadilly disruption continues
By Deborah Bowyer 17th Apr 2026
Trains across Cheshire and South Manchester are facing 'major' disruption this morning (Friday 17 April).
Damage to overhead wires at Manchester Piccadilly has meant services travelling to and from the station are facing cancellations or delays.
National Rail has warned that disruption could last until the end of the day.
The issue has been ongoing since yesterday morning (Thursday 16 April).
Network Rail has a team of engineers on-site who are working to repair the damage.
Manchester Piccadilly has said the work is taking so long because the damage is 'more extensive than anticipated'.
"We are sorry for the disruption at Piccadilly, caused by overhead line damage", a spokesperson said.
"Engineers have worked overnight on repairs which are taking longer than expected."
Network Rail, which manages the UK's rail network, has also apologised for the disruption.
"We are working closely with our train operator partners to keep passengers on the move wherever possible, so please check the National Rail Enquiries website for the latest information on train services today and over the weekend", a spokesperson said.
Rail operators are allowing their tickets on the Manchester Piccadilly travel route to be used elsewhere.
Check the National Rail website for exact details on how and where you can use your Manchester Piccadilly tickets.
