Councillors are being recommended to approve amended plans to build a new Sainsbury's store which have been on hold for more than 10 years.

Alsager Nub News told here  how the retail giant was submitting an amendment to existing planning permission to Cheshire East Council, updating the supermarket scheme on the former Twyford bathrooms site, in Linley Lane, previously approved in 2015.

The amendment has been submitted and members of Cheshire East's Strategic Planning Board will discuss the plan here at its meeting on Wednesday (April 24th).

The Strategic Highways Manager says in the report: "The applicant has demonstrated that the servicing of the site can be safely accommodated, and the provision of car parking is adequate.

"The revised contributions from the applicant mitigate the development's harm in an acceptable way and justify the removal of the previous planning conditions relating to an improved footway connection and traffic signal pedestrian crossings.

"The applicant has also agreed to introduce control and enforcement measures to regulate the use of the car park for Sainsbury's customers."

Councillors are being recommend to approve subject to a Section 106. This would include a £100,000 bus service contribution, £300,000 for Linley Lane/B5077 junction improvement works and Linley Lane footway widening works and £100,000 for local highway works.

Nine letters of support have been received raising various points including the face "most" Alsager residents have to travel out of town for petrol and grocery shopping and "this is a much-needed facility for the residents of Alsager".

A Cheshire East councillor for Alsager, Rod Fletcher, Mayor of Cheshire East, who is unable to attend the meeting, has sent in a statement to be read out at the meeting.

"I am making this statement as an Alsager ward councillor," he said. "Alsager Town Council fully supports this amended application.

"Local people continue to ask me when this new Sainsburys store will open saying it will be nice to be able to buy fuel in Alsager and no longer have to drive into the Potteries.

"Many people do their main shopping outside Alsager due to less choice in Asda which is smaller than the proposed Sainsbury's Store.

"I urge the Planning Committee to support the officer's recommendation of approval. Could a ban be imposed on construction traffic using Richard Woodcock Way?

"Also can the Council enforce the traffic calming measures that Wain Homes should be implementing to stop Richard Woodcock Way being used as a rat run?"

Members of the Strategic Planning Board are due to meet at 10 am in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall in Macclesfield on Wednesday (April 24th).
