Supermarket chain presses ahead with plans to open another store in Alsager
Sainsbury's has confirmed it is planning to open another store in Alsager.
The supermarket chain already has a Sainsbury's Local in Crewe Road but now it has revealed a new plan for a bigger store in the town.
Located on the former Twyfords site on Lawton Road, the chain says the plan would create at least 100 new jobs for the town.
The plan is for a new 25,000 sq ft store centred around an extensive range of products including fresh food, fruit and vegetables, food-to-go, cupboard staples, frozen food and freshly baked goods.
The store would also include a carefully curated selection of Sainsbury's Tu Clothing range, as well as a new Argos store inside the supermarket.
The retailer's iconic Habitat collection including on-trend furniture pieces, statement lighting and stylish accessories would also be available to order online for collection in-store via 'click and collect'.
Sainsbury's say it will shortly submit an amendment to its existing planning permission to Cheshire East Council, updating the supermarket scheme that was previously approved in 2015.
A spokesperson said: "The proposed changes, which include a new internal layout with food at its heart, the provision of solar panels on the roof, and a reconfigured car park, will allow Sainsbury's and deliver the much-needed supermarket and petrol station for Alsager."
Sainsbury's say it plans to build on the success of its existing Local store in the centre of the town, which will continue to trade once the new store is open.
The updated scheme includes a 249-space car park, including 15 disabled spaces and four ultra-rapid EV charging bays.
"The new store would also deliver substantial benefits for the local community through Sainsbury's charity, community and volunteering initiatives," the spokesperson added.
"For example, the store would take part in the retailer's 'Nourish the Nation' campaign, a programme in partnership with Comic Relief aimed at helping to tackle food poverty by ensuring communities have improved access to balanced, nutritional and sustainable food sources.
Last week, the retailer announced an increase in pay to at least £12 per for its 120,000 hourly paid colleagues, making it the largest supermarket to continue to pay the new Real Living Wage.
Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury's Director of Property, Procurement and EV Ventures, said: "All of us at Sainsbury's are passionate about our tasty, well-sourced food and we want to bring more of it within easy reach of our customers wherever we can, so we're delighted to be able to confirm our plans for a new supermarket in Alsager.
"We've been working hard to ensure our latest proposals will bring the very best Sainsbury's has to offer to the town and we're looking forward to working with Cheshire East Council to deliver this long-awaited store for the local community."
