An occupant had to be taken to hospital following a flat fire in a Alsager property.

Firefighters from Alsager and Crewe were called to Sandbach Road South, Alsager, shortly before 6am this morning (10 December) to reports of a smoke alarm sounding.

On arrival crews discovered a small fire in a bedroom had activated the alarm.

The occupant was treated at the scene due to smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters escorted an occupier from the flat and gave them oxygen as they were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

"The casualty was subsequently handed over to the care of paramedics and taken to hospital in an ambulance.

"Firefighters used water to extinguish the fire in the bedroom. They then damped the area affected down and cut away away affected materials.

"Once they were satisfied that the flat was safe firefighters left the address. They were in attendance for around an hour and 15 minutes."
