Friends and family have remembered the life of an Alsager man who joined the RAF as an observer and served during WW2 flying operations in North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

The funeral of Flt Lt Roy Hall, who was born in Alsager and educated locally, attending Sandbach School after gaining a scholarship in 1933, was held recently at Bradwell Crematorium in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Before the war, Flt Lt Hall worked at the Post Office in Stoke-on-Trent, cycling around twenty miles a day to and from work.

He volunteered for the Royal Air Force early in the Second World War and joined in 1941 at the age of nineteen, training as a navigator.

During his service he flew in Beaufighters and Mosquitos, operating across several theatres. His duties included repeated crossings of the Bay of Biscay, as well as operations in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East, with flights extending to Cairo, Khartoum, Aden and Greece.

Roy was commissioned as an officer on 6 June 1944 (D-Day) and later achieved the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Over the course of the war, he accumulated more than 1,500 flying hours.

After the war, he returned to civilian life and worked in Customs & Excise. He later lived for many years on the Fylde Coast before returning closer to his roots to spend his final years with his son and daughter-in-law in Brown Edge, Staffordshire.

In later life, he wrote a series of handwritten memoirs, recording both his early life and his wartime experiences.
