Motorists faced long delays yesterday (Sunday) after the M6 between junctions 16 and 17 was closed while police dealt with an incident.

Diversions were set in place taking traffic through Sandbach and the Alsager area to get back on to the motorway.

Police said they found a 27-year-old Alsager man on the wrong side of a bridge.

The man was arrested on suspicion of public nuisance and remains in police custody.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 12.04pm on Sunday 28th July, officers responded to the concerns for the safety of a man on the M6 motorway.

"Officers attended the scene on Day Green Road, Sandbach, and found a 27-year-old man sat on the wrong side of a bridge.

"Officers subsequently closed the motorway between junctions 16 and 17 in both directions whilst they engaged with the man.

"The man, from Alsager, was successfully engaged with by officers and came back over to the correct side of the bridge. Roads reopened shortly after 2.30pm."
