A bright future is ahead for an Alsager scout group after it was successful in a bid for a grant to install solar panels at its headquarters.

The 1st Alsager Scout Group has had solar panels put on the roof at the Frayling Scout Hall in Cedar Avenue.

The group received a grant of just under £15,000 from Cheshire East Council's Improved Greener, Community Facilities fund, adding around £5000 of their own money to the project.

And delighted scout leaders say the move will not only help to cut energy bills it also help the area in its bid to become carbon neutral.

Group scout leader volunteer, Don Longhurst, said: "The work was only finished last week but already we're seeing the benefits.

"We are already seeing batteries being charged and solar powering the usage of the hall.

"The solar panels will help us to reduce energy costs and we're delighted with the results. We saw the grant available and applied for it.

"We were told by the company who installed it that we were the first scout group to have panels installed.

"We're also hoping that we can eventually sell electricity back to the grid. The building is well-used by 10 units across the five age range sections."

The original part of the building dates back to 1968 and the scout group has had various improvements and work done since then, including double glazing and fans and is including LED lighting in their plans.

The Improved, Greener, Community Facilities fund is funded by the UK Rural England and Shared Prosperity Funds.

A spokesperson said: "The Improved, Greener, Community Facilities fund is now also funding 'Digital Projects' which you can also apply for."

The panels were installed by Burslem-based UK Solar Services.
