The Commonwealth Games final came hot on the heels of Poppy's recent success at the Para World championships in Madeira where she came home with gold, silver and bronze medals

Poppy started swimming when she was just 18 months old and says she feels relaxed in the water.

Her first competition was Club Champs at the age of eight and then the Cheshire County championships.

She spends between 16 and 17 hours in the pool each week and at the moment her favourite race is the 100fly.

"I always eat a banana before a race," she said.

Poppy came fourth in the final of the S14 200m Freestyle at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and is now training for the next Olympic Games.

Alsager Swimming Club head coach, Phil Balcombe, is delighted with Poppy's latest accolade – Sports Personality of the Year award

"It's great recognition locally for her achievements internationally and hopefully the first of many awards," he said.
