Congleton MP Sarah Russell, whose constituency includes Alsager, made a visit to Alsager High School recently.

The purpose of the visit was to speak with current and prospective politics A-Level students about her life as an MP, giving them time to ask questions afterwards.

Following the visit, the MP said: "It's always great to see young people so engaged with politics, and that the school is actively promoting this – especially in this age of online disinformation.

"The pupils were really well informed. Hearing what is concerning young people in the community holds a lot of value for me.

"The points raised at my surgeries and when I'm at community engagements, influence what I advocate for in meetings with Ministers and raise in Parliamentary debates."

There were an array of questions from the pupils, ranging between current and past legislation from the Government, to what the future may look like for young people in the UK, and encouraging young women into politics.

One prominent issue was the availability of affordable housing. Another was the expense and availability of bus travel, echoing points raised by Explorer Scouts when Russell had spoken to young people in Sandbach on a previous occasion. Russell had raised this at a Westminster Hall debate on connectivity across the North West earlier that week.

Toni Brookshaw, Teacher of History and Politics and Deputy Head of Alsager High School's Sixth Form said: "We were really pleased to welcome Sarah to our school, and she was so encouraging of our pupil engagement.

"We felt extremely proud of our students who asked thoughtful and wide-ranging questions, demonstrating their interest in Politics and their local community."
