Joy at last for residents waiting for a potholed piece of road highlighted in Parliament to be repaired

By Deborah Bowyer 25th Jul 2025

A stretch of road in Alsager town centre which is so bad the local MP complained about it in the House of Commons is to finally be repaired.

Lawton Road near Asda and near the traffic lights is set to be improved after a long battle by residents who pressurised councillors and even local MP Sarah Russell whi has seen it for herself.

Cheshire East councillor, Rod Fletcher, highlighted the matter at the last Cheshire East full council meeting asking the chair of the highways committee if the criteria used was different for Alsager.

Cllr Fletcher asked: "Lawton Road in the centre of Alsager must have one of the worst maintained roads and footways running through the centre of any town in England .

"I welcome that some improvements have finally been made after ten years of lobbying for action and more are in the pipeline, but is there a flaw in the criteria that has made people in Alsager wait so long for these improvements in the centre of Alsager."

Now Cheshire East Council has replied saying ground investigation work will start in October/November/December with a "programmed date to be confirmed".

"I would like to confirm that after consultation with the construction and design team for highways, that conventional resurfacing will now take place from Wesley Avenue to Sandbach Road South incorporating the Asda Junction.

"Due to further ground investigations that are required, this is planned to be undertaken in quarter three (October/November/December) with a programmed date to be confirmed.

"This will be published on the road repair and improvement programme 2025-2026 website during the next update in the coming weeks here. "

Congleton MP, Sarah Russell, whose constituency includes Alsager, brought the matter up recently in the House of Commons saying: "I'm thinking in particular there's a stretch of road in Alsager which is absolutely lovely and has a fantastic local cafe on it.

"It's a major part of the town centre and the degeneration of the road is making it look less attractive than otherwise it could.

"Do you agree with me that these are important points not just for the state of our roads but for the whole of the local economy?"
