A group which looks after wildlife in Alsager has praised teenagers who potentially saved the life of a young hedgehog in the town.

The teenagers found the underweight female hedgehog in Milton Park yesterday (Tuesday) and carried it to the home of Antony Cook, co-ordinator at Alsager Urban Wildlife Initiative, who lives nearby.

Antony realised the young hedgehog wasn't well so took it to Newcastle-under-Lyme Hedgehog Rescue where it is being cared for and having treatment for ticks.

Antony said: "Any hedgehog that's out in the daytime is usually in trouble. I live near the park so these teenagers brought it to my house.

"It's brilliant they did this and shows just what a caring group of teenagers they are. The hedgehog, a young female juvenile, will be looked after for a few weeks then brought back to Alsager to be released.

"Well done to these teenagers for doing this."

Antony says during the warm summer months food can be scarce so it's important to leave rotting logs, a stick pile and food and water out for them.

"It's about making the conditions right for them then they are all right. This hedgehog will be released back where it was found."
