Birdwatchers and nature lovers can help document Alsager's wildlife this weekend as part of the 'world's largest garden wildlife survey'.

The RSPB is hosting its 'Big Garden Birdwatch' from 24-26 January 2025 - where people across the country are asked to count the birds in their garden to gather data on local bird populations.

It's free to take part and open to all in the UK.

All you have to do is choose an hour between 24 and 26 January, and count the birds you see in your garden, from your balcony, or in your local park. Only count birds that land!

This avian census involves hundreds of thousands of participants across the UK. With the results, the RSPB can build a remarkably accurate picture of the state of birdlife across the country.

Last year, there were 600,000 participants who collectively counted almost 10 million birds. The House Sparrow was the most common, with 1.4 million sightings.

Local bird watcher, David Harrison, said bullfinches, siskins and redpolls were reported in less than five per cent of Cheshire gardens last year.

"Also with the current bad weather it is prudent to feed our garden birds and as well as food water is also essential," he said.

To sign up, visit the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch website.

And if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you might be able to snap some pictures of the birds as they land - send them to [email protected].
