More than half of all businesses have experienced a cyber breach attempt and 85 per cent of all businesses have experienced a phishing attempt in the past year, according to Government research.

This is why increasing cyber resilience knowledge for businesses, charities and organisations is so important.

Spotting phishing emails or social media messages specifically is of vital importance because they can lead to much more serious cyber breaches, once the attacker has gained access to your computer or IT network.

The breakfast cyber event at Crewe Hall Hotel on October 22 is the second in a series of three events across Cheshire, organised by the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner Dan Price, and run by the police-backed organisation, the North West Cyber Resilience Centre (NWCRC).

Speakers include:

  • Dan Price, Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner - introduction
  • Niomie Haynes, NWCRC - cyber basics and how to spot phishing attempts
  • Remo Belisari, RB Consultancy Ltd - why Cyber Essentials is so important for businesses

Businesses and organisations who come along to the event, which is free, can also sign up for the ongoing Cheshire Cyber Resilience Programme, which offers a bespoke one-to-one training session. Tickets are availabe here

This programme has been funded by the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner and Cheshire Police and is run by the NWCRC.

Dan Price, Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "Cyber crime can have serious consequences for businesses. The most effective defence is prevention.

"That's why I'm working closely with the North West Cyber Resilience Centre to ensure businesses in Cheshire have access to the guidance and support they need to stay protected from cyber threats."

Detective Inspector Dan Giannasi, head of cyber and innovation at the NWCRC, said: "It's absolutely essential that small businesses, charities, public sector and other not-for-profit organisations understand good cyber security.

"Prevention is the key to reducing cyber crime so our outreach strategy means we work closely with the North West business and charity sector to help them understand the simple ways to stay safe."

The North West Cyber Resilience Centre was set up in 2019 and is part of the UK-wide Cyber Resilience Centre network.

The NWCRC has more than 2000 members and supports the business, charity and non-for-profit sectors with cyber security services.
