For many families across Cheshire and Staffordshire, a magical trip to Lapland is the ultimate festive dream – a chance to experience husky rides, reindeer sleighs, snowy adventures, and of course, a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with Santa himself.

To find out how to make this dream a reality, we spoke to local travel agent Sara Dickenson, who has arranged countless Lapland holidays and even experienced the magic herself with her own family.

Sara shared her insider advice on how to plan the perfect Lapland adventure.

Here are some essential tips if you're already thinking about Lapland 2026:

Book early – really early

Sara advises: "Lapland experiences are incredibly popular and they sell out quickly.

"For the best prices, availability, and choice of resorts, you need to book a year in advance," she said. "That means if you want to go in 2026 you need to book now".

Sara added: "Weekdays often work out slightly cheaper than weekends, though families will need to weigh this up with potential school fines."

Prepare for early starts

Flights from airports such as Manchester take around 3.5 hours, with check-in often as early as 4 am for a 6 am departure. Sara said: "While the early start means you'll make the most of your time in Lapland, with a packed itinerary, children may be tired and not ready to head straight back to school the following day."

Budget beyond the package

We asked Sara, whose company is [email protected], what's included.

She said: "Most Lapland trips are full board and you're provided with snow suits and boots, but there are extras you'll want to factor in.

"Warm layers, thermal hats, scarves and liner gloves are a must – and shopping second-hand on platforms like Vinted can save money."

Sara also recommends packing snacks, as children burn through energy quickly in the snow (although you'll find no shortage of hot berry juice and ginger biscuits while you're there).

Don't overload your schedule

There seems to be a never-ending menu of activities that you can book so what's not to be missed?

"It's tempting to book every add-on available," says Sara. "There's Northern Lights hunts to husky safaris but an overloaded itinerary will detract from the magic of Lapland," Sara warns.

Her advice is that "the right package will already include tasters of most activities and little legs tire quickly in the snow, so pace your days and make sure you have time to just enjoy playing in the snow."

What to expect when you arrive

"The magic begins almost immediately," Sara explains. "Cheeky elves causing mischief at baggage claim, scenic coach rides through snowy forests (keep your eyes peeled for reindeer!), and the excitement of collecting your snow suits and boots before diving into the adventure.

The best day is, of course, Santa's Winter Wonderland. Highlights here include reindeer rides, snowmobiles, husky sleighs, tobogganing, marshmallow toasting and festive performances.

The big moment is meeting Santa says Sara. Her top insider tip: "Don't leave your Santa visit until the very end of the day when queues can be long and unpleasant in the freezing cold. Go earlier and you'll avoid the wait."

Santa's secret

"One of the most memorable moments of our Lapland trip was when Santa knew what was on the children's Christmas lists," said Sara.

"Their faces were full of excitement and wonder. But the secret to his magic is best kept under wraps for the moment," says Sara.

What about older kids and teenagers or even adults?

When asked if Lapland was suitable for older children, teenagers or couples, Sara said: "There is a Lapland for everyone. The trick is finding the right experience for you.

"Older children, teenagers and adults may not want a 'Meet Santa' experience. Some will want to be active in winter sports and some may want the authentic winter experiences like snow mobiling, husky rides or ice fishing."

Sara added: "I have access to all suppliers, resorts and experiences to make sure you get the experience you truly want - not an off-the-shelf package."

Choosing the right base

There are so many locations and resorts so where should families choose? Sara explained: "Every family is different and Lapland has something for everyone – whether it's a log cabin in the wilderness, a cosy forest lodge, an igloo with a glass roof for Northern Lights viewing or a lively ski resort with heated pools and plenty of activities.

"Picking the right location makes all the difference between a 'nice holiday' and a truly magical one," Sara explained.

"That's where using a local travel consultant can be invaluable. Not only can I take away the stress of planning during the busiest time of year, but I'll make sure your family is in the perfect place with the right experiences to bring your Christmassy dreams to life."
