An Alsager councillor fighting to get road improvements in the centre of the town says it looks like residents will have to wait even longer before any progress is made.

Councillor Rod Fletcher, both a town councillor and also a district councillor at Cheshire East, has been fighting for improvements to the Bank Corner junction for around six years.

Cllr Fletcher wants money from S106 agreements – paid to Cheshire East developers when they build in an area – to be used to fund improvements to the busy junction.

He says developers have been allowed to build even though the Bank Corner junction, a set of traffic lights, was working at "over capacity".

Cllr Fletcher says the traffic light system is working to

Cllr Fletcher says traffic often backs up to Lodge Road from the traffic lights at peak hours and the traffic lights are "out of date".

"They were installed many years ago when Alsager was not so busy. They are out of date and a new system needs installing," he said.

"Over 1,500 houses have been built in recent years. A highways officer has stated that they will investigate to see if the available S106 money can be used to implement part of this scheme," added Cllr Fletcher.

"In April 2022, I was advised that plans were being prepared for improvement to Bank Corner in the centre of Alsager.

"I was told £370,000 was available which included money from the Hall Drive development."

But Cllr Fletcher says he has had a "disappointing" response from the highways department at Cheshire East Council and the situation seems to have changed.

The reply said: "I can confirm Highways have completed an initial review of options and identified that a project budget of the order of £1.5m is necessary to deliver the improved traffic management and pedestrian crossing facilities.

"Whilst some S106 contributions have been secured and are retained by the Council, these are insufficient to fund delivery of any option identified in the study at this time."
