An Alsager town councillor fighting to get an extension on a Cheshire East application to "dispose" of public open space has had her request rejected.

Councillor Sue Helliwell is trying to stop Cheshire East Council from disposing of the space near allotments in Talke Road as she feels it is vital open space for people living nearby.

She only spotted the application "by accident" a few days before the closing date on New Year's Eve.

Alsager Nub News told here.how Cllr Helliwell and friend Jo Dale had started a campaign.

Cllr Helliwell wrote to Cheshire East asking if the correct procedure had been followed.

In a reply they said: "The process has been followed, and has identified time periods, to seek the public

views on the proposal. "Under the Local Government act 1972 (as amended by the Local Government Planning and Land Act 1980) the Council arranged for adverts to be inserted into a local newspaper circulating in the area for two consecutive weeks and allowed for a period in which representations can be submitted. "In addition to the statutory requirements, the Council deposited copies of the documents at the local library and placed it on the Council's website so that the public could be notified of the proposal. "Legal services team have received a number of responses on this matter and therefore it's reasonable to assume that the public were alerted in this instance." Cllr Helliwell says she's "disappointed" but has vowed to carry on with her campaign to stop it happening. She says the disposal would not only affect wildlife and fauna but also the mental well-being of local residents who use the area to walk. She said: "We're just getting through the pandemic and lots of people use this green space to exercise and walk their dogs. "It's a daily meeting place for many and during Covid people have found it a valuable place to meet and talk. "Above anything I have severe concerns about how the houses directly on the back can get to their bins and get to the back of their properties."
