When Twyford House Care Home resident Jill came across two visitors to the Alsager home, it brought memories flooding back of her equestrian past.

Two Shetland ponies, Will and Snowy, led by their handlers at 'Simply Shetlands', paid a visit to the Richard Woodcock Way home one Friday.

And for one resident in particular, Jill, this hit a real chord for her own grandfather had bred horses for the first world war.

A member of the Royal Surrey Regiment during those years, Jill's grandfather lived in Stratton, South London and when Jill holidayed there she was shown how to look after the animals and course ride them.

Stroking Snowy's mane, the little pony began to fall asleep with her muzzle on Jill's knee, giving Jill opportunity to share more details about her favourite pony from the past.

Jill said: "She was a Palomino, which of course is a beautiful coat colour of golden cream. Her name was Pandora, and over the summer holidays I would ride along the beach, and spend all Summer with her. She was my favourite."

Jill continued to share fond memories of her equestrian past, and her grandfather's influence.

"We used to have an electric milk float come around the local area, and when it was having some trouble, my grandad suggested they go back to using horse and cart," she said.

"When the milkman agreed my grandfather gave him one of the horses that he bred himself!

"I was around 14 years old when I would spend my free time with the horses alongside my grandad. Even now when I see a field with a horse in, I always shout 'horse!' and get excited.
