Residents across Cheshire East will have to pay more to have their garden waste bins collected in 2027, with the annual subscription charge increasing to £74.

Cheshire East Council has increased the cost of its Garden Waste Recycling Scheme by £5, rising from £69 in 2026 to £74 next year.

This increase represents a 7.25 per cent rise, with subscriptions for the 2027 collection year now open to existing customers and new subscribers.

The garden waste bin charge was introduced in 2024 at a cost of £56, going up to £59 in 2025 and £69 in 2026. This means the charge has gone up 23.2 per cent in two years since it was launched.

The council announced the lastest charges on Wednesday (28 October), confirming almost 100,000 residents signed up to the scheme during 2026.

This service provides fortnightly collections of garden waste, including grass cuttings, leaves and hedge trimmings, with all collected material sent for composting.

A 25 per cent reduction in the annual fee is available for residents receiving qualifying benefits.

The announcement comes after the council apologised to residents who experienced disruption to garden waste collections during 2026.

It said work was under way to stabilise the service and improve reliability ahead of next year's subscription period.

Cheshire East is also reviewing its refund policy following the disruption.

Cheshire East Council's cabinet member for environment, sustainability and waste management, Cllr David Jefferay, said: "I'd like to apologise to residents who have been affected by collection disruptions this year.

"We have put plans in place to stabilise collections and improve reliability, helping residents receive the standard of service they deserve.

"The scheme offers fortnightly collections throughout the year and all garden waste collected is composted, helping residents recycle their green waste in an environmentally responsible way."

There will also be a change to how subscriptions work, with automatic renewals being introduced for the 2028 collection year.

This means residents will automatically be charged for the following year's subscription unless they choose to opt out through the council's online portal.

Residents renewing for 2027 will receive a new pink subscription sticker, which should be attached to the back of their garden bin on the handle side.

Bins without a valid subscription sticker may not be emptied.

Residents can renew or sign up through the Cheshire East Council website. Those unable to register online can call 0300 123 5011.
