Chair of Alsager Town Council, Cllr Michael Unett, has written to Congleton MP Fiona Bruce, asking if she has confidence in either the Prime Minister or the Chancellor following the Downing Street parties.

In his letter, Cllr Unett said: "It was announced on Tuesday that the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, were given fixed penalty notices for lockdown restriction breaking parties in Downing Street.

"This is after repeated statements, especially from the Prime Minister, that no such parties took place and that no restrictions or laws were broken. This was clearly a lie.

"The Prime Minister also repeated this lie in the House of Commons back in December – it will be a difficult case for the Prime Minister to put forward that he did not mislead the House, which is a resigning matter on its own. Law-makers cannot be law breakers.

"While a fixed penalty notice is not an admission of guilt, the statements of apology from Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak clearly are.

"They have both lied to the British Public repeatedly and no longer have the integrity to lead. Millions of people sacrificed to follow the rules and keep each other safe.

"Seven hundred and forty-seven people died in Cheshire East in just 2020 alone while the Prime Minister and the Chancellor partied. They both must go.

"I would like to follow up with you to ask whether you still support the Prime Minister and the Chancellor or whether you will stand up and do the right thing by calling for them both to go and submit a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister?

"There have been many honourable MPs from your own party who have taken this step already and ministers in the Lords who have found they cannot serve in government under this Prime Minister.

"Surely, if you disagree with the Prime Minister's law breaking actions, you cannot continue to serve as his Special Envoy for the Freedom of Religion and Belief? Their actions are indefensible and they must both go."
