An Alsager town councillor who campaigned against land off Linley Road. Alsager being developed says the latest decision is a 'victory for nearby residents and for the flora and fauna'.

Cllr Helliwell campaigned vigoriously against the plan for the homes to be built on the land which she says is regularly used by residents for leisure and recreation.

Plus Dane Housing submitted a plan to build a mix of flats and houses on the land which was refused by Cheshire East Council's southern planning committee.

The housing company appealed, but planning inspector Benjamin Webb came down on the side of the council, although he didn't agree with all the reasons for refusal as we revealed here

Cllr Helliwell said: "I am extremely pleased that the appeal was dismissed. Whilst the inspector did not fully agree with Cheshire East Council initial decision to refuse the application, which was supported by the Southern Planning Committee.

"The appeal decision is a victory for nearby residents and for the flora and fauna on site. The site is loved and used by nearby residents who on a daily basis can see bats, birds and other wildlife.

"The land at Linley Road is protected open space and residents have every right to say the land should never be built on."

In his decision Mr Webb said: "The development would provide acceptable living conditions for its future occupants in relation to the provision of private outdoor amenity space."

And he said the effects of the development in relation to open space provision would be acceptable but he agreed with the council on the poor design.

However the planning inspector did not agree with everything Cheshire East had said. "The development would provide acceptable living conditions for its future occupants in relation to the provision of private outdoor amenity space."

Cllr Helliwell added: "I appreciate that there is a need for social housing/affordable housing but this planning application did not offer a good quality design."
