The sun may not have been out for a while but an Alsager veterinary practice has advice for when it returns.

Carl May, registered veterinary nurse and practice owner of Vets4Pets Alsager shares some of his top tips for keeping your pet cool and safe.

The practice is one of Alsager Nub News' sponsors as revealed here and has shared some advice for pet owners ready for when the sun returns.

Heatstroke or heat exhaustion, occurs when your pet's body temperature rises above its natural level and cannot be brought back down.

If you think that your dog has heatstroke, contact your local vet immediately.

Carl says:

· Ensure your pet always has fresh water so they don't get dehydrated.

· Avoid leaving your pet in a greenhouse or conservatory in the direct sun.

· Make sure there are shaded areas for rabbits and guinea pigs. You may need to consider moving their hutch or run to a cooler area such as a north facing wall or perhaps into a cool garage. Ensuring that they are not in use with exhaust or boiler fumes.

· Walk your dog in cooler periods of the day i.e. early morning and late evening.

· NEVER leave your dog in a parked car, even if it is just for a minute.

· Ensure that your pets parasite prevention treatment is up to date.
