An Alsager swimmer who competed in the Commonwealth Games narrowly missed out on a medal – but will now start preparing for the next Olympic Games.

Talented 17-year-old Poppy Maskill, a member of Alsager Swimming Club, came fourth in the final of the S14 200m Freestyle at the games in Birmingham.

But head coach at the club, Phil Balcombe, said Poppy swam well and achieved a personal best.

"She was in with a good chance of a medal but ran out of steam on the last length.

"She swam very well and we will now be working towards the Olympic Games in Paris," said Phil, who has coached the swimmer since she was nine years old.

Poppy competed in the final last night (Wednesday) and will be heading back to the swimming pool at Alsager Leisure Centre tomorrow (Friday) where Alsager Swimming Club is based.

The Commonwealth Games final comes hot on the heels of Poppy's recent success at the Para World championships in Madeira where she came home with gold, silver and bronze medals

Alsager Swimming Club, which has members from all over South Cheshire, is planning an open day in early September when Poppy will display her recent medal and tournament memorabilia.
